What is an ice bath?
An ice bath is one form of cold water immersion, the umbrella term for using cold water to recover after hard physical effort. In practice, it means a tub filled with water and ice, cold enough to sit somewhere around 10 to 15°C, with the body submerged to the chest or shoulders. A fighter climbs in after a session and stays put for a few minutes while the cold does its work.
The reason it shows up so often in combat sports comes down to what MMA does to the body. A single session can stack striking, grappling, and conditioning on top of each other, so a fighter absorbs blunt impact and deep muscle damage that a runner or a lifter never sees. That kind of load leaves muscles inflamed and sore, and the ice bath is one of the simplest tools for taking the edge off before the next session. It sits alongside sleep, nutrition, and active recovery rather than replacing any of them.
The term gets used loosely. People say ice bath, cold plunge, and cold therapy as if they mean the same thing, and often they roughly do, but the details separate them. What follows is what the term actually covers and where the confusion tends to creep in.
How an ice bath works
Cold water triggers vasoconstriction, the narrowing of blood vessels near the skin and in the muscles. Blood flow to the cooled tissue slows, which is thought to reduce the swelling and inflammation that build up after hard training. The cold also numbs nerve endings, so the immediate feeling is one of pain relief.
There is combat-specific evidence behind this. Lindsay and colleagues immersed MMA athletes in 10°C water for 15 minutes after a full session of striking, grappling, and sparring, and recorded lower cortisol, lower markers of oxidative stress, and reduced soreness at both two and 24 hours, with jump performance left intact (Lindsay et al., 2017). Ice baths have also been shown to bring down creatine kinase, a marker in the blood that rises when muscle has been damaged.
What an ice bath does not do is repair muscle on its own. It changes the recovery environment, calming the inflammatory response and making a fighter feel readier for the next day. The actual repair still depends on rest and food.
Ice bath vs cold plunge, cold shower, and cryotherapy
Most searches for this term come from mixing it up with something adjacent. All four methods below expose the body to cold, but they are not interchangeable, and the differences matter for recovery.

The ice bath and the cold plunge are close cousins. The practical split is control: a plunge uses a chiller to hold an exact temperature session after session, while a homemade ice bath drifts as the ice melts. A cold shower is the weakest of the group because water only trickles over the body instead of surrounding it, so it cannot cool tissue the way full immersion does. Cryotherapy uses cold air rather than water, which is why treating it as a synonym for an ice bath, as some guides do, is inaccurate.
Common misconceptions about ice baths
The first mistake is assuming colder is always better. A 2025 network meta-analysis of 55 controlled trials found that 5 to 10°C was marginally better for biochemical and neuromuscular recovery while 11 to 15°C was better for easing perceived soreness, and there was no case for going below 5°C. Many people default to near-freezing water on the belief that it works harder, and the research does not back that up.
The second is treating an ice bath as always helpful. Regular cold immersion after resistance training blunts the muscle-building response, an effect shown by Roberts and colleagues in 2015 and confirmed in later work on muscle protein synthesis (Fyfe et al., 2019). A fighter trying to add strength or move up a weight class has a reason to skip the bath after lifting, even though it still makes sense after hard sparring.
The third is the label problem already noted: an ice bath is not cryotherapy, and a cold shower is not a substitute for full immersion.

Is contrast therapy better than an ice bath?
Contrast therapy alternates hot and cold water and shows similar effects to cold immersion alone for soreness, with some evidence of better blood flow restoration. Either is a reasonable choice.
When should a fighter avoid an ice bath?
During an active weight cut, when the body is already dehydrated and depleted, cold immersion adds cardiovascular and thermoregulatory strain and is best left alone until after weigh-ins.
