Hyperhydration is a weight-cutting method in which an athlete drinks far more water than usual for several days, then sharply restricts fluid in the final day before a weigh-in so the body keeps flushing water and drops scale weight. It is also called water loading.
What is hyperhydration in weight cutting?
Hyperhydration is the loading half of a two-part water cut. A fighter floods the body with water for a stretch of days, well above normal intake, which quietly convinces the body it has too much fluid on board. When the water is then pulled away before the weigh-in, the body carries on dumping fluid it no longer has, and the number on the scale falls.
The weight that comes off is water, not fat or muscle. That distinction is the whole point. A fighter who needs to reach 155 pounds for a lightweight bout can sit a few pounds over during fight week and use the water cut to make the limit, then rehydrate before stepping into the cage. None of it is permanent, which is exactly why the method exists.
The term shows up most in combat sports and other weight-class sports such as wrestling, boxing, judo and Olympic weightlifting. In MMA, it is standard practice, and most fighters who compete at a listed weight are walking around heavier between camps.
How hyperhydration works
The mechanism runs on a single hormone: antidiuretic hormone, or ADH, also known as vasopressin. ADH is the body’s water-saving signal. When fluid runs low, ADH tells the kidneys to hold on to water. When there is plenty, ADH switches off, and the kidneys pass the excess as pale, dilute urine.
Days of heavy drinking keep ADH switched off. The kidneys settle into a high-output rhythm, producing large volumes of urine to clear what looks like a constant surplus. Then intake gets cut, and here is the part that does the work: ADH does not snap back on right away. The kidneys keep flushing at that elevated pace for a window of time, shedding more water than simple thirst-level restriction would remove. That lag is where the cut happens.
Researchers have tested this with intake around 100 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight per day during the loading phase, roughly two to three times a normal day’s fluid. Sodium and carbohydrate are usually pulled back alongside the water, since both help the body hold fluid.
Hyperhydration vs dehydration
These two terms describe opposite states, and mixing them up is the most common point of confusion. Hyperhydration is the setup. Dehydration is the result the fighter is aiming for on weigh-in morning. Water loading and dehydration are two stages of one process rather than competing methods. Loading is simply a gentler route to the same dehydrated weigh-in weight, one that leans on the kidneys instead of hours in a sauna.
It also differs from a straight sweat cut. Sweating out water in a sauna or a hot bath pulls fluid through the skin and is draining and taxing. Water loading instead uses the body’s own hormonal response to do much of the flushing through the kidneys, which many athletes find less punishing.

How much weight it actually shifts
This is where marketing and evidence part ways. Fighters and coaches often talk about water cuts in the range of 5 to 10 percent of body weight, and the total cut can reach that. The catch is that the water-loading step contributes only a slice of it.
A controlled study by Reale and colleagues at the Australian Institute of Sport, published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism in 2018, put the claim to the test. Twenty-one combat-sport athletes were split into a water-loading group drinking about 100 milliliters per kilogram a day and a control group on roughly 40 milliliters per kilogram. After the fluid-restriction day, the water-loading group lost about 0.6 percent more body mass than the control. Real, measurable, and smaller than gym folklore suggests. Electrolyte readings stayed within normal reference ranges, and no athlete developed hyponatremia during the protocol.
The practical read is that hyperhydration is a modest amplifier, not a magic lever. Most of a big cut still comes from the other tools working harder: cutting sodium, depleting stored carbohydrate, and sweating out the last of it in the final hours. Whatever the total, it returns as soon as the fighter drinks and eats again.
Is hyperhydration safe?
Done within sensible limits and with a real rehydration plan, water loading is a recognized practice used across combat sports. The risk sits at the extremes. Drinking enormous volumes too fast can dilute blood sodium to dangerous levels, a condition called hyponatremia, or water intoxication, that in severe cases can be fatal. The dehydration on the other side carries its own toll: body-water losses above 2 percent of body weight measurably reduce physical and cognitive performance, and aggressive cuts strain the cardiovascular system and kidneys while throwing electrolytes out of balance.
The sport has felt the consequences. In December 2015, ONE Championship flyweight Yang Jian Bing died of complications from cutting weight, and the promotion responded by banning weight-cutting by dehydration, introducing urine-specific gravity hydration testing and multiple fight-week weigh-ins to keep athletes near their walking weight. Sports-science reviews generally treat losses beyond the single digits of body-weight percentage, without medical oversight, as the point where a routine cut turns into a genuine hazard.
