A hyperbaric chamber is a sealed, pressurized enclosure where a person breathes oxygen at higher-than-normal air pressure, which pushes more oxygen into the blood and the tissue it reaches. In MMA, fighters sit or lie inside one to recover faster from hard training, injuries, and the wear of repeated head contact.

What is a hyperbaric chamber?

A hyperbaric chamber is a room or capsule that raises air pressure above the level found at sea level, usually measured in atmospheres absolute, or ATA. Sea level sits at 1.0 ATA. Inside a chamber, the pressure climbs higher while the person breathes oxygen-rich air or pure oxygen. The treatment itself is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy, shortened to HBOT.

Higher pressure changes how the body takes in oxygen. Normally, most oxygen rides on red blood cells. Under pressure, a larger amount dissolves straight into the blood plasma, so more of it reaches muscle, organs, and healing tissue than ordinary breathing allows.

Chambers come in two broad shapes. Soft, inflatable units run at low pressure for home and wellness use, while rigid clinical models reach much higher pressures for medical treatment. In combat sports, fighters treat time in a chamber as a recovery tool, the same way they treat ice baths or massage. It reaches them after training and injuries rather than during a fight.

How it works

The mechanism starts with pressure and oxygen working together. As chamber pressure rises, oxygen dissolves into the plasma, the liquid part of blood, instead of depending only on red blood cells to carry it. That extra oxygen travels to tissue that a hard training week has left starved and inflamed.

From there, the effects follow the oxygen. Cells use it to produce ATP, the molecule that powers muscle work, and to clear the lactic acid that builds up during heavy effort. Inflammation drops. Elevated oxygen also spurs the growth of new blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis, so blood can reach damaged areas more easily. Then there is the brain: researchers studying head injury have tied HBOT to cellular repair and neuroplasticity, part of why fighters look to it after concussions.

A typical session lasts somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes, with the person simply lying back while the pressure holds. None of this is a workout. The body does the repair on its own, and the chamber only changes the conditions it works under.

Mild vs clinical hyperbaric chambers

Most confusion around the term comes from the gap between two different machines that share one name. A soft, zip-up chamber in a gym and a steel medical unit in a hospital both count as hyperbaric chambers, yet they do not deliver the same thing.

Soft-shell chambers, often labeled mild HBOT or mHBOT, inflate like a sturdy tent and run at low pressure, roughly 1.3 to 1.5 ATA. Many pump in ambient air, so the oxygen concentration lands only slightly above normal room air. They cost less, need no installation, and suit home recovery.

Clinical hard-shell chambers are rigid capsules built from steel or acrylic that reach 2.0 to 3.0 ATA and deliver close to 100 percent oxygen. Hyperbaric medicine bodies such as the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society treat this higher-pressure, pure-oxygen version as true HBOT, and it is the setup behind most clinical research and FDA-cleared treatments.

Fighters and gyms almost always mean the soft, mild version when they talk about recovery, while the studies showing the strongest results usually used the clinical kind.

Why MMA fighters use hyperbaric chambers

MMA punishes the body from several directions at once. A single week can stack striking and grappling drills on top of heavy strength work, and one study of the sport recorded roughly 1.4 injuries for every 1,000 hours of training. Add the head contact that comes with sparring and fighting, and recovery stops being optional.

That workload explains the appeal. A chamber gives fighters a passive way to push oxygen into sore, inflamed tissue between sessions, which supporters say shortens the turnaround before the next hard day. Some fighters also point to head health, since HBOT has been studied as a possible aid after concussion, though doctors caution against treating it as a fix for serious brain injury.

Plenty of well-known names have talked publicly about using it. Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has described hyperbaric therapy as part of his recovery, and former WEC and UFC fighter Urijah Faber credited it with speeding the healing of a broken hand. Their visibility helped move the chamber from clinics into gyms and fighter homes.

Does the science support it?

Evidence for hyperbaric recovery sits in an unsettled place. Some studies report real gains. A 2025 systematic review noted that athletes treated at 2.5 ATA returned to pre-exercise strength and flexibility in about 3.2 days, against 5.8 days for those who did not receive it, and a separate meta-analysis found HBOT sped recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage. Markers of muscle stress, such as creatine kinase, have come down faster in some treated athletes.

Other reviews pump the brakes. A 2025 narrative review in the journal of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society concluded that support for HBOT in athletic recovery and mild brain injury stays limited, and that many studies are small or lack control groups. Researchers tend to describe it as a helpful add-on rather than a proven standalone treatment.

One point is settled. The therapy is allowed in sport, because the World Anti-Doping Agency does not ban hyperbaric oxygen, so a fighter using a chamber is not breaking anti-doping rules.

No, they do the opposite. Altitude and hypoxic tents lower oxygen to mimic high elevation, while a hyperbaric chamber raises pressure and oxygen above normal levels.
