If Fighter A knocked out Fighter B, and Fighter B once submitted Fighter C, MMA math says Fighter A handles Fighter C too. Most fans who use the phrase already know the logic is unreliable. It is conversational shorthand for a hypothetical matchup rather than a serious prediction method.
How MMA math works
The mechanics are simple. Two fighters share one or more common opponents, and their records against those opponents get lined up side by side. Whoever has the more favorable results, by this logic, should win the actual fight between them.
Writer Zack Young, in a piece on the concept, described longer versions of this as a “dominance path”: Fighter A beat Fighter B, who beat Fighter C, who beat Fighter D, stretching the transitive chain across several fighters instead of just one shared opponent. The longer the chain, the shakier the logic gets, since each additional link adds another fight’s worth of randomness.
None of this involves a formula or a governing body. It is informal pattern-matching, with no guarantee built in.
MMA math vs. betting odds and real analytics
MMA math often gets lumped in with genuine fight analysis, but the two work differently. Sportsbooks and serious handicappers weigh dozens of variables that MMA math ignores entirely: striking volume, takedown defense, cardio in later rounds, weight cut history, and how a fighter’s style interacts with the specific opponent in front of them, not just opponents from the past.

CBS Sports’ 2026 UFC betting guide points to this distinction directly, noting that a technical striker can be heavily favored against one opponent and still land as an underdog against a grappler in a different style matchup, the kind of nuance MMA math has no way to capture.
Why MMA math usually falls apart
Sometimes the chain holds. Stipe Miocic beat Andrei Arlovski, who had once beaten Fabricio Werdum, and when Miocic and Werdum actually fought at UFC 198, Miocic won. MMA math got that one right.
Just as often, it doesn’t. Cain Velasquez beat Junior Dos Santos twice, and Dos Santos had beaten Fabricio Werdum, so MMA math pointed to a clear Velasquez win if the two ever met. Werdum submitted Velasquez at UFC 188 instead.
The clearest example runs through three former UFC women’s bantamweight champions. Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, and Rousey had already beaten Miesha Tate twice before that fight. By MMA math, Holm should have handled Tate easily. Tate submitted Holm at UFC 196.
The reason is the same every time: fighting is not transitive. A fighter’s performance on a given night depends on stance, reach, cardio, weight cut, and how their specific tools match up with the person across the cage, not with a fighter from a different night entirely. Records capture outcomes. They leave out the styles, injuries, and circumstances behind them, so a fighter who struggles badly with a wrestler can still be the wrong stylistic matchup for a striker who has never wrestled anyone.
It is also worth separating MMA math from a legitimate statistical question. In a 2013 Stanford machine learning project, “Does MMA Math Work? A Study on Sports Prediction Applied to Mixed Martial Arts,” Christopher Ho tested how well a fighter’s plain win-loss record alone could predict a fight winner and found it landed close to a coin flip, correct roughly half the time. Once the model added other fight statistics, such as striking accuracy, reach, and age, accuracy climbed to around 68 percent.
Data blogger Eugene Rowe ran a narrower analysis focused specifically on shared-opponent matchups and found MMA math logic edged out random chance by a small margin, though wagering on those picks returned close to breakeven once real betting odds were factored in. The pattern in both cases points the same direction: win-loss records by themselves carry a little signal, and a fuller statistical picture carries a lot more.
