The liver is the body’s largest internal organ, sitting on the right side of the torso beneath the lower ribs. In MMA, it ranks among the most feared targets because a clean strike there can trigger a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate, often ending a fight on the spot.
What is the liver?
The liver sits in the upper right portion of the abdomen, tucked beneath ribs seven through ten and just below the diaphragm. It weighs roughly 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms), which makes it the largest organ in the body, and its everyday job has nothing to do with fighting: filtering blood, breaking down toxins, and storing nutrients.
What matters inside the cage is its position. The liver’s lower edge extends slightly past the protection of the rib cage on the right side, and it sits close to the abdominal wall with little muscle or fat cushioning it. A thin membrane called Glisson’s capsule wraps the organ and carries a dense network of nerves, which is part of why an impact there feels so different from a shot to the ribs or stomach.
That combination of exposed positioning and heavy nerve supply is what turns the liver into one of MMA’s most targeted areas, alongside the head and the legs.
How a strike to the liver affects the body
A solid hit to the liver does more than bruise tissue. The impact compresses the organ against the rib cage and irritates the nerve-rich capsule around it, which activates the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system. According to a 2022 presentation by Dr. Michael Schwartz for the Association of Boxing Commissions, that activation triggers a parasympathetic response, and heart rate and blood pressure both drop.
That drop can happen sharply enough to cause dizziness and nausea, along with a sensation fighters often describe as their legs giving out.
The reaction isn’t instant. Fighters frequently absorb a liver shot, take a step, and only then buckle. The delay comes from the time it takes those nerve signals to travel and trigger the drop in blood pressure. A 2013 biomechanical study published in PLOS ONE found that an impact as light as 5 meters per second, well within the range of a trained strike, was enough to injure the liver in simulation testing.
Liver vs. solar plexus
Fighters and commentators often lump every debilitating body shot together, but the liver and the solar plexus are different targets with different effects.

The confusion is understandable. Both sit in the midsection, and both can end a fight without a single strike landing on the head. The mechanisms differ, though: one runs through the nervous system, the other through breathing. Getting the wind knocked out often clears in a few breaths, while a clean liver shot can take much longer to walk off.
Common misconceptions about the liver in MMA
One persistent myth is that fighters can train their liver to withstand punishment, the same way they condition their shins or knuckles. The liver itself can’t be toughened through exercise. Strengthening the obliques and core muscles can reduce how much force reaches the organ, but the tissue underneath stays just as vulnerable no matter how many rounds a fighter spends on the heavy bag.
Another misconception is that liver shots only come from punches. In MMA, they land just as often from kicks and knees, particularly in the clinch, where a fighter can drive a knee upward into an opponent’s midsection without much warning. The mechanism is the same regardless of which limb delivers it.

Is a liver shot legal in MMA?
Yes. Strikes to the liver by punch, kick, knee, or elbow are legal under the Unified Rules of MMA. There’s no rule against targeting the area, unlike strikes to the back of the head or the groin.
Can a liver shot be fatal?
It’s rare. A severe hit can rupture the liver and cause internal bleeding, but no MMA fatality has been attributed to a liver shot, in part because ringside medical staff and modern trauma care catch serious injuries quickly.
Why do liver shots usually land on the right side?
Because that’s where the liver sits. Most liver punches come from an orthodox fighter’s left hand, since a left hook naturally wraps toward an opponent’s right side. Kicks and knees can reach the same spot from either side, depending on stance and angle.
How long does it take to recover from a liver shot?
Minor hits usually clear up within minutes once the pain and dizziness pass. More serious injuries, such as a laceration or hematoma, can take weeks to heal and may need imaging to rule out complications.
