Quick Definition
A judo gi is the two-piece cotton uniform worn for judo, cut loose and woven heavier than most other grappling uniforms so it can survive constant gripping, pulling, and throwing.
What is a judo gi?
“Judo gi” is short for judogi, the traditional uniform judoka wear for judo practice and competition. Judo’s founder, Jigoro Kano, adapted the design from the kimono and other Japanese garments in the early 1900s. The judogi became the first uniform of its kind used across modern grappling sports, and karate later borrowed much of the same template for its own uniform.
The design follows judo’s central action: throwing. A judoka grips the opponent’s jacket, sleeve, or collar to set up a throw, and that same jacket has to hold together through being pulled, twisted, and slammed into the mat over and over. That is why a judo gi runs heavier, looser, and more reinforced than most other martial arts uniforms.
A judo gi is made of three parts, each cut from a different weight of fabric to match how much stress it takes. The jacket, or uwagi, carries the heaviest fabric of the three because it absorbs most of the gripping and throwing. Lighter canvas pants, called shitabaki or zubon, prioritize freedom of movement over grip resistance, and a cotton belt, the obi, finishes the uniform while marking rank through color.
How a judo gi is built
Judo gis come in two weight classes. Single-weave jackets use one layer of fabric, usually 300 to 550 grams per square meter, and stay cooler through long training sessions. Double-weave jackets use two layers, which pushes the weight to 650 to 1,050 grams per square meter and makes the fabric harder for an opponent to grip tightly.
Competition tightens that range further. The International Judo Federation requires approved judogi to weigh between 650 and 750 grams per square meter, with jacket fabric strong enough to withstand more than 2,200 newtons of tensile force before tearing. That puts competition judogi at the heavy end of what’s available anywhere in the sport.
The collar takes the most reinforcement of any part of the gi. It’s the primary target during kumikata, the grip-fighting exchanges that open most judo matches, so manufacturers stitch it thick and stiff to resist crushing. Shoulders and knees get doubled stitching for a similar reason: those are the spots that absorb the most repeated impact from throws.
Judo gi vs. BJJ gi
Judo and BJJ share a common ancestor in the judogi, but the two uniforms have drifted apart to match how each sport is actually fought. Judo is decided standing up, so its gi favors durability and a legal amount of grip surface over comfort. Ground fighting is where BJJ spends most of its time, and that shows up in a closer fit that leaves an opponent less fabric to grab. Each sport’s governing body writes those priorities into its rulebook: the IJF for judo, and the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) for BJJ.
| Category | Judo gi | BJJ gi |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Looser, with wider sleeves and a longer jacket skirt | Tailored and tapered, with a shorter skirt |
| Competition fabric weight | 650-750 g/m² (IJF standard) | 380-650 g/m² (IBJJF standard, updated 2024) |
| Collar | Thick and stiff, built to resist crushing grips | Thinner and more flexible, suited to lapel chokes |
| Common weave | Double-weave for competition | Pearl weave or single-weave |
| Competition colors | White or blue only | White, royal blue, or black |
| Sizing system | Numeric labels, keyed to height and weight | Alpha labels (A0 to A6), keyed to weight and height |
The fabric weight numbers explain a lot of what practitioners notice when they switch sports. A competition-legal judo gi starts right at the IBJJF’s 650 g/m² ceiling and often runs heavier from there, which is one reason a judo gi and a BJJ gi aren’t simply interchangeable once competition rules get involved.
Can you use a judo gi for BJJ?
For casual training, yes. Most BJJ gyms are relaxed about a first-timer showing up in whatever gi they already own, and a judo gi’s heavier fabric holds up fine through a few rounds of rolling.
Competition changes the answer. The IBJJF’s 2024 uniform rule update set a fabric weight ceiling of 650 grams per square meter for tournament gis, while competition-grade judo gis are built to the IJF’s 650-to-750-gram standard. The two ranges barely touch, so most judo gis fall outside the legal window and get flagged during gi inspection.
The reverse runs into trouble too. A BJJ gi’s tighter fit and thinner collar don’t meet the IJF’s requirements for grip surface and looseness, so a BJJ gi won’t clear inspection at a judo tournament either. The uniforms cross over fine for a single trial class. They stop crossing over the moment a competition ruleset is involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear a judo gi to a BJJ class?
Most gyms allow it, especially for a trial class or two. The heavier fabric and looser fit make it less ideal for regular training, but it won’t get anyone turned away at the door.
Why are judo gis heavier than BJJ gis?
Judo is a standing, throwing-based sport, so the gi has to survive constant gripping and impact. A heavier, double-weave jacket resists tearing and holds up to repeated throws better than a lighter fabric would.
Is a judo gi legal in BJJ competition?
Generally no. The IBJJF’s 2024 rule update caps competition gi fabric at 650 grams per square meter, and most competition judo gis meet or exceed that weight, which disqualifies them from IBJJF events.
Can you use a BJJ gi for judo?
Not for competition. The IJF requires a looser fit and a thicker collar than most BJJ gis provide, and a BJJ gi’s tighter cut won’t pass an IJF equipment check.
What are the parts of a judo gi called?
The jacket is the uwagi, the pants are the shitabaki or zubon, and the belt is the obi. Each piece is cut from a different weight of fabric.
