What is a BJJ gi?

The gi is BJJ’s standard uniform, though most people on the mat just call it “the kimono.” It’s a heavy woven jacket paired with reinforced pants and a colored belt that shows a practitioner’s rank, from white through black.

The uniform exists because BJJ is a grip-based sport. Fighters grab the collar, sleeves, and pant legs to control an opponent, set up sweeps, and finish chokes like the cross-collar or the lapel guillotine. Strip the fabric away and half the technique library disappears, which is why BJJ runs a separate no-gi ruleset for grappling without one.

BJJ’s gi traces back to judo. Mitsuyo Maeda, a traveling judoka, taught Carlos Gracie in Brazil in the 1910s, and the Gracie family adapted both the art and its uniform over the following decades. The version that resulted is trimmer through the sleeves and torso and shorter in the jacket skirt than its judo ancestor, changes suited to a sport that lives on the ground instead of on the feet.

How a BJJ gi is built

Fabric weight decides how a gi feels and how it holds up. Weight is measured in GSM, grams per square meter, and most training gis fall between 350 and 550 GSM. Lighter fabric breathes better and dries faster. Heavier fabric resists tearing and grips harder but runs hotter.

Pearl weave has become the standard weave for jackets, prized for balancing durability against weight. Gold weave, once the default among older practitioners, has fallen out of favor because it shrinks aggressively wash after wash. Pants are usually cut from cotton or ripstop, a tear-resistant fabric that also shows up in some ultralight travel gis.

None of this is decorative. A gi that’s too light gives an opponent nothing to grip. One that’s too heavy exhausts the wearer before the round ends.

BJJ gi vs. judo gi

Judo and BJJ both descend from Japanese jacket wrestling, and their uniforms still look close enough that beginners assume one gi works for both. It doesn’t hold up under real use. Judo revolves around standing throws, so its gi runs heavier and looser to survive getting yanked around mid-takedown. BJJ spends most of a match on the ground, so its gi is trimmer and lighter, built for grip fighting in tight spaces rather than being thrown across a mat.

A cheap student-grade judo gi and a cheap BJJ gi aren’t that far apart. Once either sport is played at a competitive level, the differences in cut and weight stop being cosmetic.

BJJ gi rules and colors

Competition organizers don’t leave gi specs to chance. The IBJJF’s 2024 rule update set a legal weight range of 380 to 650 GSM for jacket fabric, which shut out the ultralight gis that used to give lighter competitors a grip edge. Pearl weave is the only weave that reliably meets that range while staying competition-legal. Ripstop, once common on jackets, is now restricted to pants.

Color rules are stricter than in most sports. IBJJF and AJP events limit competitors to white, blue, or black gis. Other organizations are looser: NAGA allows any color combination. That’s part of why gi shopping outside serious competition circles looks a lot more colorful than a tournament bracket does.

Is a BJJ gi the same as a kimono?

Yes. “Kimono” is the term Brazilian practitioners have used for the uniform since BJJ’s early days, and both words describe the same jacket-pants-belt uniform.

Can I train BJJ in a judo gi?

Most gyms allow it for casual training, since the two uniforms are close enough in construction. Competition is different: tournament rules typically specify a jiu-jitsu-cut gi, not a judo gi.
