Water cutting is the practice of temporarily losing body water, mainly through fluid manipulation and sweating, so a fighter can weigh in under the limit for a lower weight class. Most of that weight returns within a day once the fighter rehydrates.

What is water cutting?

MMA fighters compete in weight classes so that size and strength stay roughly even between opponents. Water cutting is how many fighters get around that system to their advantage. In the days before a bout, a fighter drops several pounds of body water to register under the limit at the official weigh-in, then drinks and eats their way back up before fight night. The aim is to be the bigger athlete in the cage while still fitting a lighter division on paper.

What matters is which kind of weight is actually leaving the body. This is not fat loss, and it is not the slow dieting a fighter does across a training camp. Water makes up around 60% of body mass, and a large share of it can be pushed out and replaced within a short window. That is why a lightweight who walks around at 170 pounds can weigh in at 155 and be back near 170 by the time the referee calls the action. The pounds that disappear before the scale are mostly fluid, and they come back fast.

How water cutting works

The body holds water in a rough equilibrium, and water cutting works by disturbing that balance on purpose. A fighter cuts fluid intake in the final day or two before the weigh-in while still losing water through normal functions such as sweating and urination. With little coming in and plenty going out, body mass drops.

A related method called water loading pushes the same idea further. The fighter drinks large volumes of water for several days, often well beyond normal intake, then restricts it sharply just before the weigh-in. The body, having adjusted to flushing out the surplus, keeps expelling water even after intake falls. This “flushing mode” is why the technique can strip off more weight than fluid restriction on its own.

Sweating handles the final stage. Fighters use saunas, hot baths and sweat suits to force out the last pounds of water in the hours before they step on the scale. Cutting sodium and carbohydrates plays a supporting part, since both make the body hold onto water. None of this touches fat. It is a temporary shift in how much fluid the body carries, which is why the scale can move so quickly in both directions.

Water cutting vs. weight cutting vs. water loading

These three terms get used interchangeably, but they describe different things. Weight cutting is the broad label for everything a fighter does to reach a lower class, dieting and fat loss included. Water cutting is the specific final stage that manipulates body water rather than fat. Water loading is one method inside water cutting: the drink-heavy-then-restrict protocol that primes the body to flush fluid.

How much weight fighters cut

The amount varies by fighter and division. A routine cut runs 10 to 15 pounds of water in the final days, though heavier or more aggressive competitors sometimes push toward 20 or 30. As a share of body mass, the figures climb higher than many fans expect. In a study of MMA competitors in Ireland by John Connor and Brendan Egan, 97% of those surveyed lost weight to compete, with an average loss of 7.9% of their body mass.

Evolve Daily reports that fighters can shed anywhere from 5 to 11 kilograms of water before a competition, meaning some enter the cage close to 11 kilograms above the weight they registered. Glycogen explains part of that total. The carbohydrate stored in muscle holds water alongside it, so depleting it sheds roughly 1.5 to 2 kilograms of combined glycogen and fluid on top of sweat losses.

The line between a manageable cut and a dangerous one tracks with body size. A 2019 review in the journal Sports reported that water loading of around 3% of body mass appears safe and effective for grappling athletes without hurting performance, while larger reductions remain far less studied. Coaching resources tend to flag cuts beyond roughly 5% of body mass as the point where medical supervision becomes advisable.

Is water cutting dangerous?

Done carelessly, water cutting carries real medical risk, which is why it draws steady criticism inside the sport. Severe dehydration strains the kidneys, thickens the blood and shrinks the fluid cushioning the brain, a concern in a sport built around head contact. A widely cited case study by Andreas Kasper and colleagues documented an elite MMA fighter who lost 18.1% of his body mass over a phased cut and developed acute kidney injury along the way.

Dehydration at weigh-in is common rather than rare. Research by Jetton and colleagues, using urine testing, found that 39% of MMA athletes were significantly dehydrated less than 24 hours before competing. Because weigh-ins often happen a full day before the fight, some athletes never fully rehydrate and compete while still short on fluid.

Regulators have started to push back. ONE Championship is the most prominent promotion to target the practice head-on, swapping traditional same-week cuts for hydration testing and walking-weight checks meant to catch fighters who strip water to make a class. Many organizations have also banned intravenous rehydration, once a quick way to refill fluids after the scale.
