Russian Sambo Style

Quick Definition

Russian Sambo style (usually just called sambo) is a grappling-based combat sport that blends judo, wrestling, and folk fighting styles from the former Soviet Union. Developed for the military in the 1920s, it’s now a foundation for some of MMA’s most dominant grapplers.

What is Russian Sambo style?

The word sambo comes from samozashchita bez oruzhiya, Russian for “self-defense without weapons.” Soviet officers Viktor Spiridonov and Vasili Oshchepkov built the system separately in the 1920s, each mixing judo and catch wrestling with regional styles like Georgian chidaoba and Armenian kokh.

Their students trained together for years, and the two separate approaches gradually blended into one system. That combined method became the Red Army’s standard for hand-to-hand combat, and the Soviet government recognized it as an official sport on November 16, 1938.

Today the International SAMBO Federation (FIAS) governs the sport worldwide. Sambo is often mistaken for “Russian judo,” but the two arts made different rulebook choices about what’s legal on the ground, and that’s what actually sets sambo apart.

Sport sambo and combat sambo

Sambo splits into two main competitive forms. Sport sambo is grappling only: throws and pins score points, while armlocks or leg locks can end the match by submission. Striking isn’t part of the format. Chokeholds aren’t either; the ban is deliberate, and it sits on the sport’s official prohibited-technique list.

Combat sambo adds strikes. Fighters wear gloves and headgear and are allowed to punch, kick, and knee, and chokes come back onto the legal list. It’s the version closest to MMA in a jacket, and it’s the version that shaped much of Russia’s fight-camp pipeline.

There’s also a smaller third format, beach sambo, contested outdoors on sand. It skips the ground phase almost entirely; throws alone decide the outcome.

Sambo vs. judo

Sambo grew directly out of judo, so the confusion is understandable. Both arts start with a jacket grip and look for a clean throw, but the two rulebooks made opposite choices about what happens once the fight hits the ground.

Judo preserved the choke and eliminated the leg lock. Sambo made the reverse trade. That single decision is why a sambo-trained fighter tends to hunt for a leg entanglement where a judoka looks for a collar choke.

Why sambo matters in MMA

Islam Makhachev makes the clearest case for what a sambo background does in MMA. He won the 2016 Combat Sambo World Championship before he ever stepped into a cage, and in 2026 he was named an Honored Master of Sport in sambo, one of Russia’s top athletic distinctions. His mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov built an undefeated UFC career the same way, and heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko was a multiple-time combat sambo world champion first.

The transfer makes sense beyond the individual names. Combat sambo already trains striking and grappling inside one ruleset, so its athletes don’t have to bolt two sports together later.

The kurtka also teaches grip fighting that carries straight into clinch work against a cage. And because sambo scores a throw higher when the attacker stays on their own feet, sambo-trained fighters tend to arrive in MMA already comfortable finishing a takedown from a dominant position, rather than falling down with their opponent.

Common misconceptions

Sambo is just Russian judo.” The lineage is real, but sport sambo removed chokes and added leg locks that judo has banned for decades. They’re closer to cousins than twins.

Sambo fighters can’t finish with a choke.” That’s only true in sport sambo. Combat sambo allows chokes, and a choke that ends the fight scores as an outright win.

Sambo has colored belts like judo or BJJ.” It doesn’t. The belt in a sambo uniform is functional: it closes the jacket and gives an opponent a grip. Rank is instead recognized through competitive titles and sporting classifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does sambo stand for?

It’s an acronym for samozashchita bez oruzhiya, Russian for “self-defense without weapons.” The Soviet government recognized it as an official sport on November 16, 1938.

Are chokes allowed in sambo?

Not in sport sambo, where chokeholds sit on the prohibited-technique list. They’re legal in combat sambo, where a choke that ends the fight scores as a total victory.

Is sambo an Olympic sport?

Not yet. The IOC granted sambo provisional recognition in 2018, but it still hasn’t appeared on an Olympic program.

Which MMA fighters have a sambo background?

Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Fedor Emelianenko all competed in combat sambo at a world championship level before their MMA careers began.

Is sambo effective for MMA?

Its track record says yes. Combat sambo already blends striking, throws, and submissions inside one ruleset, which is close to how MMA itself gets scored.
