Quick Definition
A purse forfeit is a financial penalty in MMA that requires a fighter who misses weight to give up part of their fight pay, usually 20 to 30 percent, with most of the money going to their opponent.
What is a purse forfeit?
When a fighter steps on the scale over the limit at an official weigh-in, the bout rarely gets cancelled. It usually goes ahead, and the fighter who missed weight pays for the mistake out of their own pocket. That deduction is the purse forfeit.
The athletic commission overseeing the event sets the penalty together with the promotion. In the UFC, it runs from 20 to 30 percent of the purse. Most of that money goes to the opponent as compensation for agreeing to face someone who came in heavy on the scale.
The rule has a simple logic behind it. Extra weight is an advantage, so a fighter who skips the last pounds of a cut would otherwise profit from breaking the fight agreement. The forfeit removes that incentive and pays the fighter who held up their end.
How a purse forfeit works
Missing weight sets off a chain of decisions that has to resolve within hours. A fighter who comes in heavy on the first attempt is usually given extra time by the commission, often an hour or two, to lose the remaining weight. If they still can’t make the limit, the promotion asks the opponent whether they will accept the fight at a catchweight, which is an agreed weight above the divisional limit.
Once the opponent agrees, the commission and promotion settle on the forfeit percentage. GroundedMMA reports that the opponent usually receives at least half of the deducted amount, with some commissions keeping a share as a fine of their own. The fighter who missed weight also becomes ineligible for performance bonuses, such as the UFC’s $50,000 Performance of the Night award.
Non-title UFC bouts allow one pound over the divisional limit, so a lightweight can weigh 156 pounds without penalty. Title fights have no allowance at all. A champion who misses weight is stripped of the belt, and a challenger who misses cannot win it, even with a victory.
How much do fighters forfeit?
Twenty percent is the common floor, and the percentage climbs with the size of the miss. Recent UFC cards show the range in practice.
| Fighter | Event | Missed by | Forfeit |
| Beneil Dariush | UFC 322 (Nov 2025) | 1.2 lbs | 20% |
| Chris Padilla | UFC 327 (Apr 2026) | 2 lbs | 20% |
| Deiveson Figueiredo | UFC 324 (Jan 2026) | 2.5 lbs | 25% |
| Gianni Vazquez | UFC Vegas 113 (Feb 2026) | 5 lbs | 25% |
| Bryan Battle | UFC 319 (Aug 2025) | 4 lbs | 30% |
| Saimon Oliveira | UFC Rio (Oct 2025) | 8 lbs | 50% |
Extreme misses draw extreme penalties. Saimon Oliveira lost half his purse at UFC Rio in October 2025 after weighing in eight pounds over the non-title bantamweight limit, per MMA Knockout, and GroundedMMA notes that William Knight was docked 40 percent at UFC 271 for a 12-pound miss.
When both fighters miss, the math changes. At UFC Vegas 113 in February 2026, Eduarda Moura and Wang Cong each came in heavy for their flyweight bout, and Yahoo Sports reported that neither forfeited anything because both missed by a similar amount.
The exact dollar amounts often stay hidden. Fighter purses are not public record in New York, which is why ESPN could not report the size of Beneil Dariush’s fine at UFC 322, even though the 20 percent figure was announced.
Purse forfeit vs. commission fine
Fans and broadcasters use “fined” for both, which causes confusion. The two penalties send money in different directions.
| Purse forfeit | Commission fine | |
| Trigger | Missing weight | Misconduct such as cage jumping or post-fight brawls |
| Who receives the money | Mostly the opponent | The state commission |
| Who sets it | Commission with the promotion | Commission alone |
| Usual size | 20 to 30 percent of the purse | Varies case by case |
Broadcast graphics rarely make the distinction, so the word on screen is a poor guide to where the money actually ends up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who gets the money from a purse forfeit?
Mostly the opponent. Depending on the commission, the state may keep a portion of the deduction as its own fine, but the opponent generally receives half or more.
Does the fighter who missed weight still get paid?
Yes. They keep the rest of their purse and any win bonus in their contract, but they lose eligibility for discretionary performance bonuses.
What happens if both fighters miss weight?
The bout usually proceeds at a catchweight with no forfeit for either side, as happened with Eduarda Moura and Wang Cong at UFC Vegas 113.
Do other promotions use purse forfeits?
Yes. The PFL fines a fighter who misses weight 20 percent of their purse and adds a one-point deduction in the fight itself, per Sportskeeda.
Can a fighter who forfeits part of their purse still win a title?
No. A fighter who misses weight cannot win the belt, and a champion who misses is stripped before the fight begins.
