What is Performance of the Night?

Performance of the Night, often shortened to POTN, is one of the UFC’s post-fight bonus awards. The promotion hands it to individual athletes whose work stood out from everyone else who competed that evening, whether through a highlight-reel finish or a one-sided decision.

The award arrived on February 11, 2014, when the UFC replaced its older Knockout of the Night and Submission of the Night bonuses with a single, more flexible category (Bleacher Report). Instead of splitting rewards between the best knockout and the best submission, matchmakers could now recognize any standout individual showing, regardless of how the fight ended.

Two Performance of the Night bonuses are usually given out per event, and they sit alongside the Fight of the Night award. Winners get picked by UFC management rather than by judges or fans, and the names are announced at the post-fight press conference and posted on UFC.com.

How the bonus works

The selection is discretionary. There is no scoring system, no checklist. UFC leadership, with CEO Dana White typically making the final call, decides which showings earned the extra money once the card wraps.

A standard night produces four bonus checks: one Fight of the Night award shared by two fighters, plus two separate Performance of the Night awards. That pattern bends often. On cards stacked with finishes, the UFC may hand out extra POTN checks, and on quieter nights it can skip Fight of the Night altogether and reward individual efforts instead.

A finish is not required. Most winners do score a knockout or submission, but a one-sided decision can qualify just as easily, and the award has even gone to a fighter who lost his bout. Nikolas Motta received the first Performance of the Night bonus for a losing fighter at UFC Baku in June 2025 (Wikipedia).

Beginning in January 2026, the UFC also introduced a separate $25,000 check for any knockout or submission that misses the main four awards, so more finishers now leave with something extra (MMA Fighting).

Performance of the Night vs Fight of the Night

The two awards get mixed up constantly, and the difference comes down to who is being rewarded. Performance of the Night goes to an individual for a standout solo showing. Fight of the Night honors a single bout and pays both athletes who took part in it, win or lose.

That distinction explains why a fighter can occasionally collect both on the same night. Win a thrilling back-and-forth war with a highlight finish, and the UFC can name the bout Fight of the Night while singling out that same fighter for Performance of the Night, stacking two checks.

How much is a Performance of the Night bonus?

The headline figure has moved over the years. From 2014 through the end of 2025, the standard Performance of the Night bonus was $50,000. Starting with UFC 324 in January 2026, the UFC doubled the base award to $100,000 (MMA Fighting).

The promotion can raise the amount for a specific card, and it has done so more than once. At UFC 262 in 2021, the bonuses jumped to $75,000 after lightweight Tony Ferguson lobbied for more (CBS Sports). UFC 300 in April 2024 carried a then-record $300,000 per bonus.
