Becoming a UFC Champion is the ultimate goal of most MMA fighters. Not only is it the peak of the professional MMA mountain but it also comes with eternal fame, legacy, money & even the power to pick some of your opponents along with the promotion itself.
In order to become one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time, you often need to become the greatest fighter in your division, in your era. There are of course a few exceptions, such as if the current Champion in your division is an all-time great himself / herself.
Becoming a UFC Champion involves climbing the UFC rankings until you receive a title shot. Once a title contender defeats the reigning Champion, they take the belt and become the new title holder of the division.
In some instances, two title contenders will face each other for a vacant UFC belt (if no Champion exists in the weight class – This may happen if the former Champion vacates the belt, retires or is stripped of their title).
