How much weight should you start with?

Most sources point to the same starting range: roughly 5-10% of body weight. A 170-pound fighter, for example, would start somewhere between 8 and 17 pounds, then add weight gradually as conditioning improves. Northwestern Medicine physician Dr. Colleen Harangody recommends capping the load at around 10% of body weight and increasing it slowly rather than jumping straight to a heavier vest.

Going heavier too soon does more than make a workout harder. Research on runners found that once vest weight crossed roughly 10% of body weight, running speed itself started to drop, meaning the extra load stopped adding a useful stimulus and started just slowing the athlete down.
