In most MMA promotions, every weight class has one champion and a list of ranked challengers beneath them. The number one contender is the fighter at the head of that list, the one considered closest to a title shot. The champion holds the belt and sits above the numbered rankings, so the number one contender is the highest-ranked fighter who does not currently hold the title.
The status exists to answer a simple question fans and matchmakers keep asking: if the champion had to defend the belt tomorrow, who has earned the right to be across the cage? From February 2013 onward, a panel of MMA media members voted each week to rank the top 15 fighters in every division. Number one contender vs. mandatory challenger
Fans who follow boxing often assume MMA works the same way, and this is where the confusion usually starts. Boxing has a formal system; MMA, for the most part, does not.
In boxing, a mandatory challenger is designated by a sanctioning body such as the WBA, WBC, IBF, or WBO. The champion must either fight that challenger within a set window or risk being stripped of the belt, as Wikipedia’s overview of the term explains. The obligation is built into the rules.
An MMA number one contender carries no such enforcement. There is no outside body ordering the UFC to book a particular fight, and no belt is vacated if the promotion books someone else. The term describes standing in the rankings rather than a rule the champion has to obey.
