Water loading is a weight-cutting method in which a fighter drinks unusually large amounts of water for several days before a weigh-in, then cuts intake sharply so the body keeps flushing fluid and drops weight fast.
What is water loading?
Water loading is one of the ways fighters make weight for a division they walk around above. The fighter deliberately overdrinks for a stretch of days, teaches the body to expel fluid at a high rate, then stops drinking so that the flushing carries on after the tap is off. The scale falls because the body keeps dumping water it is no longer receiving.
Two things matter about what comes off. It is water, not fat or muscle, and it returns with rehydration. A fighter who drops several kilos this way over fight week is not smaller in any lasting sense. He is lighter for the minute he steps on the scale, then rebuilds most of that weight before the cage door shuts.
The technique rarely works alone. It sits inside a broader weight cut alongside sodium reduction, carbohydrate cuts that release water stored with glycogen, and passive sweating in a sauna or hot bath. The drinking phase is the part people picture, though the terminology around it tends to get muddled.
How water loading works
The whole thing runs on one hormone. Antidiuretic hormone, also called vasopressin, tells the kidneys how much water to hold. When fluid levels rise, the brain switches ADH off and the kidneys flush the surplus as pale, dilute urine. Push intake high enough and the body reads that overflow as its new baseline, holding ADH down for days on end.
Nutritionists often set the loading volume near 100 millilitres per kilogram of body weight a day, roughly a fighter’s weight in kilograms multiplied by 0.1 in litres. For a 90-kilogram athlete that lands around eight to nine litres daily. When intake is then slashed, ADH does not come back online straight away. That lag is the point. The kidneys carry on flushing at the raised rate for a while, past where plain fluid restriction would have stopped.
Two other factors ride alongside the water. Cutting sodium helps because water follows salt. A low-sodium diet during the loading phase pulls more fluid out of the space around the cells. Cutting carbohydrate matters too, since the body stores about three grams of water for every gram of glycogen, so burning through glycogen frees that bound water. The International Society of Sports Nutrition notes that sodium restriction and water loading together drive heavy urine output and acute water loss.
Water loading vs water cutting vs weight cutting
These three terms get swapped around, and that is where most of the confusion lives. They are not the same thing.

Put plainly, water loading is the setup and the water cut is the payoff. A fighter loads water so that cutting it works harder later. Weight cutting is the umbrella term over both, plus the diet and training that fill out fight week.
How much weight it moves
Fighters commonly shed 5 to 10 percent of body weight across a full cut, and water loading is only one contributor to that number. For a 220-pound athlete, 5 to 10 percent works out to somewhere between 11 and 22 pounds shifted before competition day.
The ISSN position stand puts firmer figures on what a body can lose and still recover from: about 6.7 percent at 72 hours out, 5.7 percent at 48 hours, and 4.4 percent at 24 hours before the weigh-in. Glycogen depletion during fight week accounts for a 1 to 2 percent drop by itself. Where any individual lands depends on his starting body composition, how long he loads, and how hard the methods stack together.
Is water loading dangerous?
It can be. Drinking huge volumes of water in a short window can dilute blood sodium to a dangerous point, a condition called hyponatremia or water intoxication that can trigger seizures in severe cases. The dehydration that follows brings its own problems: electrolyte depletion, cardiac strain as blood volume drops, slowed reaction time, clouded judgment, and stress on the kidneys. A 2025 study of MMA and Muay Thai fighters found markers consistent with acute kidney injury at weigh-in.
The danger is not hypothetical. In December 2015, 21-year-old ONE Championship flyweight Yang Jian Bing died from dehydration-related complications while cutting weight for a fight in Manila. His death pushed the promotion to ban dehydration-based cutting and bring in “walking weight” tracking plus urine hydration testing across fight week, a system it began rolling out in 2016.
What separates a managed cut from a reckless one
Sports science bodies tend to place the ceiling around 5 to 8 percent of body mass over roughly a week, paired with a rehydration plan that kicks in the second a fighter steps off the scale. The figure on the scale is not what makes a cut safe or unsafe. The deciding factor is whether recovery gets planned with the same care as the loss.

How long does water loading take?
Most fighters run it over the final five to seven days before a weigh-in, tapering intake down across the last two or three days and stopping fluid on weigh-in day.
Does the weight come back?
Yes. Because the loss is water rather than fat or muscle, most of it returns within a day of rehydrating and refuelling, which is the entire reason fighters do it.
Can water loading go wrong?
Yes. Drinking too much too fast can trigger hyponatremia, and cutting too hard afterward can cause dangerous dehydration. Both have led to hospitalizations and, in rare cases, death.
