What is a refeed?

In combat sports, a refeed is the eating half of post-weigh-in recovery. Once a fighter steps off the scale, two things have to come back: fluid and fuel. Rehydration handles the fluid. The refeed handles the fuel, mostly carbohydrate, which the body stores in the muscles and liver as glycogen.

The word is borrowed from dieting, where a refeed means a short break of higher-carbohydrate eating during a longer calorie deficit. In MMA, the meaning is narrower. It points to the concentrated refuel that happens in the hours between making weight and walking to the cage.

The reason it matters is simple. A hard weight cut leaves a fighter running on empty. Many fighters deliberately drop their carbohydrates low in the final days to burn off glycogen and the water attached to it, then strip more water in the last day before weighing in. That makes the number on the scale but drains the tank. The refeed is how a fighter fills it back up, both restoring energy and putting real body mass back on. Analysis of boxing bouts has linked bigger post-weigh-in weight regain to better outcomes, with winners tending to regain more than their opponents (The Conversation, 2025).

How a refeed works

Glycogen is the stored form of glucose and the main fuel for the short, explosive efforts that fill an MMA round. During fight week, many athletes cut carbohydrate intake low, sometimes under 50 grams a day for several days, to burn through those stores and lose the weight tied to them (Gatorade Sports Science Institute). By the weigh-in, glycogen sits close to empty.

Refeeding reverses that. Once weight is made, the fighter takes in fast-digesting, low-fibre carbohydrate that the gut can absorb quickly, and glycogen begins to refill. This also moves the scale. Every gram of glycogen is stored in the muscle alongside roughly 3 grams of water, so refilling glycogen pulls water back in with it (Boxing News). A trained athlete can hold somewhere between 400 and 800 grams of glycogen, which is why careful refeeding adds usable body weight rather than only topping off energy.

Time is the constraint. Fully restocking muscle glycogen can take around 24 hours, yet most promotions weigh fighters 24 to 36 hours before the first bell (MyMMANews). The window is tight. One study of wrestlers found that even a large carbohydrate intake did not fully restore muscle glycogen within 13 hours (Kondo et al., 2021). What a fighter recovers depends less on the meal than on how deep the original cut went.

Refeed vs. rehydration

These two terms sit side by side and often get blurred, but they solve different problems. Rehydration replaces the fluid and electrolytes lost through dehydration. The refeed replaces fuel, the carbohydrate stored as glycogen. Both add weight back, and both run at the same time after the weigh-in, which is where the confusion comes from.

Sports nutrition guidance treats the two as one coordinated recovery rather than a contest. The International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests fluids take precedence in the first minutes after weighing in, with fast carbohydrate following once the gut settles, and sets a shared aim of regaining at least 10% of body mass before the fight (ISSN, 2025).

Common misconceptions

A refeed is not a cheat meal. The image of a fighter demolishing pizza right after the scale is mostly a myth. A refeed leans on specific, fast-digesting carbohydrates chosen to refill glycogen without upsetting the gut, and it usually keeps fat and fibre low so digestion stays quick.

There is also a ceiling on how much food helps. The stomach empties at a limited rate, so overeating tends to cause bloating and nausea rather than faster recovery. Extra calories beyond what the gut can process do nothing to speed glycogen storage.

Refeeding cannot fully undo the cut, either. Because muscle glycogen takes a day or more to rebuild, a big cut usually cannot be reversed in the short window before a fight. A fighter who took off less water and less fuel starts with a smaller hole to fill.
