What is a red belt in BJJ?
The red belt is a solid red belt that sits at the top of the jiu-jitsu ranking system, above black belt and above the striped coral belts. It marks the 9th and 10th degrees, and holders are addressed as grandmaster rather than professor or master.
This rank is not something a practitioner competes for or tests into. Renzo and Royler Gracie describe it as being reserved “for those whose influence and fame takes them to the pinnacle of the art.” In practice, that means decades of teaching and building academies that carry the art forward, not a strong tournament record.
Because the requirements are measured in decades, the red belt is one of the rarest ranks in all of martial arts. Only a handful of people have ever held it, and most were either members of the Gracie family or direct students of the founders.
Where the red belt sits in the BJJ belt system
An adult in BJJ works through five belt colors before any of this becomes relevant. The order runs white to blue to purple to brown to black. Black belt itself is not the finish line. It carries six degrees, and the ranks that follow are where coral and red belts appear.

The jump from black belt to red belt is not a single promotion. A practitioner works through all six black belt degrees, then both coral belts, and only then reaches the red belt at the 9th degree.
Red belt vs coral belt
Most people who search for the red belt are trying to sort out how it differs from the coral belt, and the two get mixed up constantly. The simplest way to tell them apart is by color: coral belts are striped, and the red belt is solid red.

The coral belt name comes from the coral snake, whose banding the red-and-black pattern resembles. A coral belt holder is a legend of the sport who has spent 30 or more years teaching at black belt. The red belt sits one full tier above that, and its holders are the people the coral belts themselves came up under.
The 9th and 10th degree red belts
The red belt covers two separate degrees, and the distinction matters. The 9th degree is the highest rank a living practitioner can realistically reach through a lifetime in the art.
The 10th degree is different. It was set aside for the pioneers who created Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and in practice that means the Gracie brothers: Carlos, Oswaldo, George, Gastão, and Hélio. Two figures from outside the Gracie family, Luiz França and Oswaldo Fadda, were recognized with a posthumous 10th degree in 2014 for their role in spreading the art through a separate lineage.
No living practitioner currently holds the 10th degree. Hélio Gracie, who died in 2009, was the last person recognized at that level while alive.
How rare the red belt really is
The timeline is what makes this rank almost unreachable. Under the IBJJF system, moving from a fresh black belt through every degree to the 9th degree red belt takes a minimum of 48 years. Someone who earned a black belt at 19, already an exceptional feat, could not receive a red belt until age 67 at the earliest.
That math filters out nearly everyone. A practitioner has to earn a black belt unusually young, then stay active in the art for roughly half a century so the promotion has time to arrive. Competition results do not speed it up, since the clock counts years at black belt, not medals won.
The result is a rank held by a small number of people across the entire history of the sport. Their names carry weight because reaching the red belt says something no trophy can: that a person gave a lifetime to jiu-jitsu and was still on the mats to be recognized for it.
