The Flyweight division, as defined by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, groups together all combat sports fighters who fight at 125 lbs or less.
The UFC’s Flyweight division was officially brought into existence in 2011. The first Champion of the division would be decided by a 4 man tournament between Joseph Benavidez, Ian McCall, Demetrious Johnson & Yasuhiro Urushitani. The winner would be able to call themselves a UFC Champion.
Demetrious Johnson went on to win the tournament and become the inaugural UFC Flyweight Champion. He would go on to defend his belt 11 times before finally losing to Henry Cejudo in a controversial decision.
Cejudo would retire 2 years after winning the belt & Deiveson Figueiredo would take his place as kind of the Flyweights.
The UFC were once allegedly very close to shutting down the Flyweight division. However, the division had new life breathed into it partly thanks to Henry Cejudo’s headlining grabbing behaviour & impressive performances inside the Octagon.
