Jon Jones’ Only Loss In MMA

jon jones

Jon Jones is the most dominant light heavyweight champion that MMA has ever seen. He also holds the record for being the youngest MMA fighter to ever be crowned a UFC champion, when he defeated Shogun Rua on 19 March 2011 at UFC 128, while he was only 23 years old.

Since he became champion, Jon Jones has been an extremely controversial figure, due to a few past offences like a hit and run on a pregnant woman, and failing multiple PED tests while in competition.

However, one of the most controversial parts of Jon Jones’ history is the sole loss on his professional MMA record. Technically, Jon Jones is undefeated, except for the fact his official record has that single digit loss on it. This loss was a disqualification (DQ) loss to Matt Hamill which happened at the Ultimate Fighter Season 10 finale. It happened in the 1st round of a fight which Jon Jones was dominating in.

The DQ happened when Jones was in full mount on top of Matt Hamill and was raining down brutal shots on Hamill’s face. Jones then started dropping illegal elbows down on his opponent, called 12 to 6 elbows. 12 to 6 elbows are when a fighter raises his elbow to the sky, with his hand directly pointing up in line with his elbow, and drops his elbow straight down on to his opponent’s head.

The referee in the fight, Steve Mazzagatti, immediately called a stop to the fight and Jones was disqualified, while Matt Hamill was declared the winner.

Since that fight, which was Jones’ 4th fight in the UFC, Jones has never lost. Dana White, the president of the UFC, has even tried to overturn this loss to a ‘no contest’, here is a direct quote from White “The guy’s (Jones) never lost a fight ever. That one loss on his record, we’re trying to get that (overturned)… It was at a time and a place in the Nevada State Athletic Commission when it was at its worst.”

Hamill heard the comments flying around about getting the DQ loss on Jones’ record overturned and he responded, asking for a rematch to settle it: https://twitter.com/hammer_hamill/status/1143969793596383233?lang=en
